The nose is a very distinctive facial element!
Often a nose correction not only fixes an aesthetic problem, but also clears the airways. In our practice for aesthetic and plastic surgery in Munich, we specialise in scar-free nose corrections that are performed closed and will be happy to advise you on the possibilities, risks and costs of such an operation.
Many patients also wish to have their nose corrected in combination with other changes to the face, such as a facelift or forehead lift. This is not a problem for us, we advise you individually and thus find the perfect way to improve your outer appearance.

Solution for typical problems
The shape and size of the nose is of central importance for the effect of the face. Especially in today’s media-conscious times, it has become an important aspect of self-esteem for many people. They are happy about the possibility of harmonising the face through a successful nose correction and thus indirectly positively influencing their appearance in professional and private life. In individual cases, a crooked nose, a large hump, a dip in the bridge of the nose or the size of the nose in relation to the rest of the face can be perceived as disturbing.
In addition to the nose, the chin is also important for a harmonious profile. Therefore, it may have to be included in the planning of the operation. If the inside of the nose is very narrow, usually because the nasal septum is crooked, breathing through the nose may be impaired. Also, after injuries or diseases in the nose area, a nose correction might be desirable to restore the original shape.
Correcting the shape of the nose is one of the most frequently requested plastic surgery operations. In the course of a nose correction, the nose can be reduced, enlarged or straightened. The shape of the tip or the size of the nostrils can also be changed. The possibilities for optimising the shape of the nose are manifold and must therefore be individually adapted. They require a lot of experience.
What to expect from a Nose Correction
Good prerequisites for a successful result are people with an overall harmonious face and medium-thickness skin whose nose can be adapted to the rest of the face through a clearly defined operation. A significant change to the nose is possible, but should always be carried out with a view to a resulting balance of the facial features. It is important that the individual type is not changed by the nose correction.
Adolescents who wish to have a nose correction should, if possible, wait until the end of the pubertal growth spurt, which is generally reached at the age of 14-15 for girls and somewhat later for boys. The operation should be discussed in particular detail with adolescents in order to enable a mature decision for the operation and thus also to achieve an ultimately satisfactory result.
When restoring the shape of the nose after illness or injury, the surgical result is naturally very dependent on the initial findings. In the case of defective conditions of the nose, a satisfactory result can usually be achieved by using implants made from the patient’s own body material (cartilage from the nose, ear or rib).
Your new look after the rhinoplasty
If the indication is correct and the expectations are realistic, patients are usually very satisfied after a nose operation and happy with the result achieved. The improvement of the outer appearance usually means the beginning of a new phase of life with increased self-satisfaction and self-esteem.
However, it should not be forgotten that in an average of 10 – 15 % of all nose operations worldwide, the desired result is not achieved.
What risks are to be expected with Nose Correction?
Complications are rather rare and usually a permanently good result can be achieved – however, it is not possible to guarantee a surgical result. Infections of the wound area are rare and can usually be completely healed with appropriate antibiotic treatment. Wound healing disorders are equally rare, whereby factors usually play a role which are discussed in detail in the consultation before the operation, such as delayed healing in diabetics, smokers and patients with blood clotting disorders.
Temporary numbness may occur in the surgical area as a result of the severing of fine nerve branches. In the course of time, depending on the nerve supply, sensitivity is largely restored, but this is by no means certain. In the long term, the tip of the nose may have reduced sensitivity.
Increased scarring can cause the tip of the nose to droop and result in an unfavourable profile. After swelling has subsided, irregularities may become visible that were initially concealed by the swelling. Overall, rhinoplasty is a low-complication operation, but the desired result is not always achieved.
How does the anaesthesia for a Nose Correction take place?
Rhinoplasty can be performed under twilight sleep, but is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Which anaesthetic is used depends on the extent of the procedure. With a general anaesthetic, you will be asleep during the entire operation. You will be examined by an anaesthetist before the operation to determine whether you are fit to be anaesthetised. The anaesthetist is present throughout the operation and controls the anaesthesia.
To induce twilight sleep, you will be given a sedative (either as a tablet or as an intravenous injection into the arm vein). You are awake but relaxed and insensitive to pain. Manipulation of the bone may be perceived by a feeling of pressure, and a pulling sensation or similar may also be felt in individual cases. You are also aware of the sounds of the operation itself and in the operating theatre.
What is the procedure for a nose correction in the practice of Drs. von Isenburg & Neuhann-Lorenz?
1 The personal information
A nose correction requires comprehensive information. The planned procedure has a significant impact on the integrity of the patient. Therefore, we always clarify all procedures and existing risks in detail beforehand. In preparation, you should think about things beforehand and make a note of any questions. It is particularly important for us that you present your fears and concerns so that we can then dispel them. Our team of experts is also available for further discussions or telephone enquiries.
2 Preparation for treatment
Especially before a planned surgical procedure, you should be in as good a state of health as possible. Please limit nicotine and alcohol consumption to a minimum. If you regularly take medication, please discuss this with our doctors Dr. von Isenburg, Dr. Neuhann-Lorenz or Dr. Haas.
3 Procedure of the operation
A nose correction usually takes one to two hours. More complex operations can also take longer. For the operation, the skin of the nose is detached from the cartilage and bone to bring it into the desired shape. The changes required vary greatly from person to person. In the case of a crooked nose, the nasal septum usually has to be corrected as well. Often, if this is possible, plastic surgeons choose the approach from the inside, with incisions inside the nostrils. This approach does not leave any visible scars on the outside of the skin.
In other cases, especially with complex operations and very thin skin, an open technique is preferred with a small incision on the columella, the bridge of skin between the two nostrils. Finally, the skin is reattached to the newly shaped nose, the incisions are closed and a shaping bandage (plaster, plaster, aluminium splints) is fitted. One problem is the thick skin, as it cannot shrink enough. It can be a limiting factor for a reduction of the nose. Soft tamponades serve to stabilise the nasal septum and absorb draining tissue secretions like small sponges.
What is to consider after the Nose Correction?
Immediately after the surgery
In the first few days after the operation, there is often swelling of the nose, occasional pain in the wound area and, especially if a nose has been tamponaded, a dull headache. Minor bleeding from the nose immediately after the operation is normal. Avoid blowing your nose during the first postoperative week.
Bruising in the nose and midface area and numbness of the skin generally pass two to three weeks after the operation. Nasal tamponades are removed a few days after the operation, all splints and skin sutures at an interval of about 10 to 14 days.
Restrictions & recommendations
In any case, you should stop taking aspirin or similar medication at least 14 days before the procedure. It is advisable to plan for about three weeks after the operation, as you will still be physically limited in the first period after the operation. To minimise post-operative swelling, you should also allow yourself as much rest as possible on the following days. Any swelling that may occur is often greatest on the second and third post-operative day and then decreases continuously.
Important to consider!
If possible, you should spend the first days after the operation lying in bed with your upper body elevated. Also reduce your nicotine and alcohol consumption to a minimum postoperatively and avoid sauna and steam bath visits for a few months!
Sitting activities can generally be resumed after one week. Sport and all other strenuous physical activities are only allowed again after about two to three months, even after consulting your doctor. Avoid any rubbing or bumping of the nose as well as sun exposure for about 8 weeks.
Recommendations for glasses wearers
You can wear contact lenses again immediately after the operation. Glasses should not be worn for 6 – 8 weeks after removal of the nose plaster. In order to avoid any pressure on the newly formed nose and thus an impairment of the surgical result, the glasses should, if necessary, be fixed to the forehead with an adhesive tape or a plastic splint should be worn under the glasses.
Can a nose correction be repeated?
In principle, it is almost always possible to repeat a nose correction. However, the conditions are then always significantly worse than with the first operation and the operation is also considerably more difficult. Regular check-ups in our practice help to detect and treat any complications in good time.
In addition, we offer online checks via the app Klara. If problems occur, it can be considered on a case-by-case basis which corrective measures should be taken. Follow-up operations, if necessary, should take place after one year at the earliest, when a largely stable condition has been achieved.
The costs of a nose correction in Munich
The correction of the external nose generally serves to improve the external appearance, which is why the costs for the operation are usually not covered by health insurance. If, in addition to the aesthetic correction, an improvement of the nasal breathing has to be carried out, the costs for this are often fully or partially covered by the health insurance.
Where does the operation take place in Munich?
In most cases, a nose correction is performed during a short inpatient stay. We have highly professional partners for this. Our practice ensures post-operative monitoring by well-trained, medical staff after the hospital stay.
